Things to do
Mesmerizing Boat Rides Through Dense Mangroves and visits to Limestone Cave
This is by far the biggest attraction of the Baratang tour. The boat ride originates at Baratang and a fast-moving boat ride takes you through the creek about 6 kilometres down south. The fast-moving boat, surrounding sea and forest are mesmerising experiences for the traveller. The boat ride is about 6 km one way.
The boat ride ends as you enter the mangrove creeks of Baratang Island. The mangrove creeks are a captivating gateway to nature's serenity. Gliding through the narrow waterways surrounded by dense mangrove forests is an enchanting experience. The intricate network of roots arching above and below the water creates a surreal canopy.
Here you will get down from the boat and walk a few hundred meters to the limestone cave. The Limestone Caves in Baratang are a mesmerizing natural wonder, known for their intricate formations and captivating textures. These caves are a geological masterpiece, with stalactites and stalagmites creating fascinating patterns over millennia. As you step inside, the cool, damp air and the surreal ambience transport you to a world untouched by time.
After visiting the limestone caves you have to return to the mangrove forest where the awaiting boat will take you back to Baratang main jetty.
The Mud Volcano
The mud volcano is an overland journey of about 20 minutes from the boating jetty.
Baratang's Mud Volcanoes are a fascinating natural wonder and a rare geological phenomenon. These volcanoes erupt with bubbling mud and gases, caused by the release of underground natural gas that pushes mud to the surface. Unlike fiery volcanic eruptions, these are cool, quiet, and non-violent, making them safe to observe. They offer a glimpse into the Earth's dynamic processes and are one of the few accessible mud volcano sites in India.
The volcanoes are small mounds, surrounded by lush greenery, and they continually reshape themselves as the mud flows and dries. This phenomenon is particularly intriguing for geologists and curious travellers alike.
The Evening Spectacle of Parrots Returning to Roost
Parrot Island is another interesting destination in Baratang, renowned for its unique natural phenomenon where thousands of parrots return to roost every evening. As the sun begins to set, the sky comes alive with flocks of parrots creating a breathtaking visual and auditory spectacle. The synchronized movement of these vibrant birds against the backdrop of the setting sun is a sight that leaves visitors spellbound.
The parrot island can best be enjoyed in the evening so one has to stay here overnight to enjoy the site. Day visitors in most cases would have to give it a miss.
